Dr Carlo Longhitano
About
Dr Carlo Longhitano is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at James Cook University and a forensic psychiatrist practising at North Queensland Forensic Mental Health Services. He earned his MD in 1999 from the University of Catania, Italy, where his dissertation examined the impact of psychological interventions on cognitive impairments in schizophrenia. He completed postgraduate general psychiatric training in Oxford and advanced forensic psychiatry training at St George's University of London before taking up senior forensic psychiatry roles across London. He has called Townsville home since 2018.
Dr Longhitano is a co-investigator on JCU's randomised clinical trial comparing a ketogenic diet with a standard diet in adults with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia — a project funded by the Baszucki Brain Research Fund and supported by the Metabolic Psychiatry Clinical Trial Working Group. He is a member of the Forensic Faculty of RANZCP, a board member of the Margaret Roderick Centre for Mental Health Research, and a scientific advisor to the Australasian Metabolic Health Society. He is the author of multiple peer-reviewed articles and two textbook chapters, and holds a firm conviction that the future of psychiatric treatment lies at the intersection of lifestyle medicine and personalised medical care.
