As a functional medicine practitioner, Dr. Anne Chappel takes a holistic approach to thyroid health, focusing on the root causes of dysfunction rather than solely managing symptoms. By incorporating lifestyle adjustments, personalised nutrition, and biochemical individuality into her treatment plans, she aims to restore balance and optimise thyroid function in women. This approach not only addresses existing thyroid disorders but also works towards preventing future issues.

The Role of the Thyroid in Women’s Health

The thyroid gland plays a pivotal role in regulating many of the body’s processes, including metabolism, temperature regulation, and heart function. When the thyroid is underactive (hypothyroidism), it produces too little thyroid hormone, which can result in symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, depression, and cognitive difficulties. Conversely, an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) can cause weight loss, anxiety, insomnia, and an increased heart rate.

For women, thyroid health is particularly important due to the interplay between thyroid hormones and reproductive health. Thyroid imbalances can contribute to menstrual irregularities, infertility, and complications during pregnancy. In fact, untreated thyroid disorders during pregnancy can lead to serious complications, such as preterm delivery, miscarriage, and developmental issues in the child

As women go through hormonal transitions—puberty, pregnancy, and menopause—their risk of thyroid disorders increases. These periods of hormonal fluctuation can exacerbate thyroid imbalances, leading to a range of health issues.

Functional Medicine Approach

Thyroid Disorders in Australia: A Growing Concern

Thyroid disorders are more prevalent in Australia than many people realise. According to the Australian Thyroid Foundation, around 10% of Australians will develop some form of thyroid disorder during their lifetime.

Women are particularly affected, with estimates suggesting they are up to 10 times more likely to experience thyroid dysfunction compared to men. This disparity highlights the importance of increased awareness and early detection for women.

Shockingly, it is estimated that around 850,000 Australians are living with an undiagnosed thyroid condition.

Many women suffer from symptoms such as fatigue, weight changes, and mood fluctuations for years without realising that their thyroid could be the underlying cause. This delay in diagnosis can lead to worsening symptoms and further complications down the line.

Functional Medicine: A Holistic Approach

Conventional medicine often treats thyroid disorders with medications like thyroxine (for hypothyroidism) or beta-blockers (for hyperthyroidism). While these treatments can help manage symptoms, they don’t always address the root causes of thyroid dysfunction. Functional medicine, on the other hand, takes a more comprehensive approach, looking at the patient as a whole and aiming to identify and correct the underlying imbalances causing the thyroid dysfunction.

In functional medicine, thyroid disorders are often linked to a combination of factors, including:

  1. Nutrient Deficiencies: Nutritional imbalances can have a direct impact on thyroid function. Iodine, selenium, and zinc are essential nutrients for thyroid hormone production. Without adequate levels of these nutrients, the thyroid cannot function optimally. In Australia, iodine deficiency is particularly common in women of childbearing age
  2. Chronic Stress: Prolonged stress can lead to adrenal fatigue, which disrupts the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis, the system responsible for regulating thyroid hormone production. Women, particularly those juggling multiple responsibilities, are often more susceptible to chronic stress, making stress management a crucial component of thyroid health.
  3. Inflammation and Autoimmunity: Many thyroid disorders, particularly hypothyroidism, are linked to autoimmune conditions such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. In these cases, the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland, causing inflammation and impaired function. It is estimated that autoimmune thyroiditis affects around 7% of women in Australia
  4. Gut Health: There is a growing body of evidence supporting the connection between gut health and thyroid function. The gut microbiome plays a crucial role in immune function, and disruptions in gut health can lead to inflammation and autoimmune reactions that affect the thyroid. This relationship highlights the importance of addressing gut health when treating thyroid disorders.

Personalised Care for Thyroid Health

In my practice, I begin by conducting a comprehensive assessment of each patient’s health history, diet, lifestyle, and symptoms. This personalised approach allows me to identify the unique factors contributing to each patient’s thyroid dysfunction. I also utilise advanced blood tests and pathology markers to determine thyroid function, looking at levels of TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone), Free T4, Free T3, and thyroid antibodies.

My treatment plans go beyond conventional medication. My personalised approach includes:

  • Nutritional Support: Ensuring optimal levels of iodine, selenium, and other key nutrients that support thyroid function. For example, studies have shown that iodine supplementation can significantly improve thyroid function in women with iodine deficiency
  • Hormonal Balance: For women, balancing reproductive hormones is crucial to optimising thyroid health. l may recommend bioidentical hormone therapy or other interventions to regulate hormones, particularly during times of hormonal transition, such as menopause or pregnancy.
  • Stress Reduction: Chronic stress is a major contributor to thyroid dysfunction. I work with patients to develop stress management strategies, including mindfulness practices, meditation, and lifestyle changes aimed at reducing the impact of stress on the body.
  • Gut Health Restoration: Addressing gut health is a key component of my approach to thyroid health. By improving the balance of the gut microbiome, reducing inflammation, and repairing the gut lining, she helps restore immune function and reduce autoimmune reactions affecting the thyroid.

Thyroid Health and Women’s Lifespan

One of the significant advantages of functional medicine is its focus on prevention and early detection. By addressing thyroid imbalances early, women can avoid long-term complications, such as cardiovascular issues, osteoporosis, and cognitive decline, which are associated with untreated thyroid disorders.

Regular thyroid function testing is especially important for women who are at higher risk, including those with a family history of thyroid disease, a personal history of autoimmune conditions, or symptoms suggestive of thyroid dysfunction. Early detection allows for timely intervention, which can prevent the progression of thyroid disease and improve overall health outcomes.

Biochemical Individuality: A Personalised Approach to Health

A key tenet of my approach to thyroid health is recognising the biochemical individuality of each patient. No two women are alike, and the same is true for their thyroid function. Factors such as genetics, environment, lifestyle, and diet all influence how the thyroid operates in each individual.

By taking a personalised approach, I tailor the treatment plans to each patient’s unique needs, ensuring that every aspect of their health is addressed. This personalised care extends beyond thyroid function to encompass hormone balance, metabolic health, stress management, and overall well-being.

Functional Medicine Approach

Awareness and Advocacy for Thyroid Health

One of the biggest challenges with thyroid disorders is the lack of awareness among the general population. Many women experience symptoms of thyroid dysfunction for years without realising that their thyroid may be the root cause. Symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, mood swings, and hair loss are often dismissed or attributed to other causes, leaving thyroid issues undiagnosed and untreated.

Raising awareness about thyroid health is essential. By increasing education and encouraging women to get regular thyroid function tests, we can help more women achieve early diagnoses and improve their quality of life through timely interventions.

Conclusion

Thyroid health is a critical aspect of women’s well-being, affecting everything from energy levels and metabolism to reproductive health and mental clarity. By taking a functional medicine approach that addresses the root causes of thyroid dysfunction, Dr. Anne Chappel provides personalised care that goes beyond symptom management.

Her focus on nutrient optimisation, hormone balance, stress reduction, and gut health restoration ensures that her patients receive comprehensive care that not only treats existing thyroid issues but also works to prevent future problems. With thyroid disorders affecting a significant proportion of Australian women, increasing awareness and encouraging early detection is more important than ever.

By adopting a holistic, personalised approach to thyroid health, women can achieve better long-term outcomes, enhanced well-being, and a higher quality of life. If you suspect a thyroid issue or are looking to optimise your thyroid health, consider consulting with a healthcare practitioner who specialises in functional medicine for a comprehensive, individualised plan.

Understanding Autism Assessments: Signs, Process and What to Expect

Autism is far more common, and far more varied in how it presents, than many people realise. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, there were 290,900 Autistic Australians in 2022, a 41.8 per cent increase from 205,200 in 2018. Prevalence is higher in males than females, at 1.6 per cent compared with 0.7 per cent, though this gap has been narrowing, with the growth rate in identified autism among females considerably higher than among males between 2018 and 2022. This reflects a broader, well recognised issue, autism has historically been underdiagnosed in girls and women, partly because diagnostic tools were developed based on how autism tends to present in boys and men.

Perimenopause Symptoms Most Women Mistake for Stress or Burnout

Many women in their 40s and 50s find themselves feeling exhausted, emotionally overwhelmed, forgetful, and unlike themselves. The demands of work, family, relationships and everyday responsibilities make it easy to assume these changes are simply the result of stress or burnout. What many women don't realise is that these experiences may actually be linked to perimenopause.
